29% more places in Brussels winter shelter
This winter, the Brussels Region can provide shelter to 1.241 homeless people and families, that is to say 281 more places than last year. 'I'm really glad that our shelter plan is ready before the winter. This way we can prevent the homeless, not seldom families with children, from spending the cold winter months on the street', states Pascal Smet.
Last year the winter shelter started too late due to a number of reasons. 'This time we wanted to be ready to face winter and we have made a priority out of it', asserts ministre Pascal Smet, within the Common CommunityCommissioncompetent for the assistance to the people in need. 'Moreover, we wanted to have at least ten procent more beds than last winter. We managed to achieve this goal: compared to last year, there are 280 extra places available in the shelter, that is 29% more places.'
For next winter, Brussels plans to create 1.241shelter places for the homeless. In order to improve structurally the shelter service offered to homeless families with children, the Brussels Region has bought a building in Schaerbeek which can provide shelter to 150 people, a capacity that nearly equals that of the shelter located on the Troon straat/rue du Trône. This enables us to provide a sustainable answer to the homelessness problem and to avoid that in the future we always have to look for other shelter facilities.
